On the occasion of its 10th Anniversary, AAA announces a new initiative to build a focused collection of material on performance art and make it accessible to the public. During the Fall of 2010, several pilot projects will be completed, including substantial research on and documentation of Hong Kong performance art from 1975 to 2005 and the assembling of a private video collection documenting performance art in Southeast Asia (from 1988 to 2007) by Malaysia-based artist Ray Langenbach. This initiative will encompass more than ten individual performance art collections by AAA's 20th anniversary. Action Script: Symposium on Performance Art Practice and Documentation in Asia is the initial step in launching this ten year initiative launching a new direction for the Archive.
Performance art or the production of 'live art' by artists is a vital element in the flourishing contemporary art scene in Asia. Festivals celebrating performance art proliferate in cities across the region and provide significant platforms for interaction, activism, and creative development. In addition to questions concerning the presentation, contextualisation, and reception of performance art, there are many issues surrounding the documentation of this ephemeral art form. From 21—25 October, internationally respected performance artists, archivists, and researchers will gather in Hong Kong to critically discuss the challenges associated with performance work. The aim is not only to provide better resources and a deeper understanding of performance art in the region, but also to further encourage its practice. Action Script is the inaugural event of AAA's Performance Art Initiative.
Action Script: Symposium on Performance Art Practice and Documentation in Asia is organised by AAA in collaboration with the Centre for Community Cultural Development (CCCD) to announce AAA's Performance Art Initiative. Over the course of five days, the conference will bring together artists, curators, scholars, students, and others interested in the field in dialogue and debate that will contextualise the exciting evolution of performance art in Asia.

Participating professionals include Martha Wilson of Franklin Furnace Archive (USA); Paul Clarke of Live Art Archives (UK); Farah Wardani of Indonesian Visual Art Archive; Thomas Berghuis who researches Chinese performance art; Ray Langenbach, a scholar and artist; and Wen Yau of Asia Art Archive. The two-day roundtable discussion will be moderated by Debra Wacks, an art historian who specializes in performance art, and Ko Siu-lan, an artist and curator who has participated in numerous international festivals and exhibitions. They will be joined by Seiji Shimoda, founder of the pioneering Nippon International Performance Art Festival (NIPAF) and other artists and festival organizers from around the region to analyze past experiences and consider the future of performance work in Asia.
